AP Biology
Course Objectives
Students will analyze and relate orally and in writing an understanding of the major concepts of biology, including those of molecular and cell biology, genetics, population biology and the physiology of plants and animals. In laboratory investigations, students will gather and analyze quantitative data to illustrate many of these concepts. The two main goals of AP Biology are to help students develop a conceptual framework for modern biology and to help students gain appreciation for science as a process.
Course Overview
AP Biology is a college level course in content and in difficulty. It provides an excellent background in biology for the college-bound student and is designed to be equivalent of a college introductory course taken by biology majors in their first year. Students completing this course should be well-prepared to take the nationally-administered Advanced Placement Biology Exam. The textbook for the course is the sixth edition of Neil A. Campbell and Jane B. Reece’s Biology.

Students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways including, but not limited to:

Students will be asked to demonstrate their knowledge and skills in a variety of ways including, but not limited to:
- Homework, including reading of each chapter prior to class lectures, concept mapping and reading guides
- Prelab questions
- Participation in laboratories and class activities – keep lab journals
- Quizzes and tests – both multiple choice and performance event
- 1 Formal complete laboratory write-up per quarter, totaling 4 per year.
- Current event essays – students search literature, prepare essay and give presentationonce per semester
